Frequently Asked Questions

What is Epiphany?

“Epiphany” comes from the Greek word Ἐπεφάνη, which means to show forth, to appear, to become visible, or to clearly show. In Titus 2:11-15, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you.”

The first Epiphany describes Christ’s birth into the world and the second Epiphany refers to Christ conquering the world while displaying his Glory.  In this present age, those who have been changed by his first coming are to be “Living Epiphanies or Glory Reflectors,” which affirm the reality of the second coming of Jesus Christ. God has commissioned us to make disciples who show forth His glory to the entire world (Matthew 28:18-20).

Baltimore is a city that has been overcome by darkness. Often cited for its violence, crime, poverty and abandonment. But God, in his infinite wisdom, established a plan to make the light become visible to the world through his church (Ephesians 5:32).

Why does Baltimore need another church plant?

  • 80-85% unchurched population
  • Baltimore is the 7th most dangerous city in America (Forbes).
  • Deadliest year in Baltimore history 2015
  • A national leader in murder, rape and theft
  • High Poverty Rate (US Census) – 34% of children live below the poverty line
  • 70% drop out rate by 10th grade
  • Those influenced by, Pan Africanists, Black conscious, Hebrew Israelites, and those with bias’ towards traditional expressions Christianity are on the increase.
  • Hopelessness and Fatalism mark the residents
  • An overall dissatisfaction with Church

The majority of evangelical churches have left the city, moralized or politicized the gospel, or ceased to truly love the city. As a result, many are plateaued, declining or dead.

To the average Baltimorean, the church is an antiquated, irrelevant, manipulative institution. In other words, Jesus is unknown.

That is why we seek to plant Epiphany Church in Baltimore.

Where will the church plant be located?

Greenmount West, Charles North, Barclay, Oliver, Old Goucher, Johnston Square

Central Baltimore is a diverse and strategic area in the heart of the city. Greenmount West and the surrounding neighborhoods is the residential section of Baltimore’s Station North Arts and Entertainment District. Located adjacent to Penn Station and Charles Street, this rapidly revitalizing neighborhood, which is rich in diversity, is quickly becoming home to many young artists and commuters.

Central Baltimore is where all the worlds of Baltimore collide. It’s an eclectic mix of arts, entertainment venues, historic buildings, poverty, and blight. Located directly north of Penn Station, the area has been transformed into one of the most hip locations in the city with the Station North Arts and Entertainment District drawing artists, music lovers, and young professionals into the heart of Baltimore. Yet also it is where the racial and socio-economic divide meet in one place. Baltimore is known for its stark contrasts and divisions, but central Baltimore is where everything comes together.

It is the most strategic location in the city. We want to make disciples from the block to the boardroom and Central Baltimore affords us this opportunity.

When will the church be launched?

We will be beginning core group meetings regularly Beginning of 2017
